Introduction

JSW Infrastructure, a prominent player in India's port sector and a member of the esteemed JSW Group, recently disclosed the receipt of a letter of award for the construction of an advanced, all-weather, deep-water greenfield port at Keni in Karnataka. This noteworthy venture, valued at Rs. 4,119 crore, is slated for execution through a public-private partnership, signifying a substantial stride towards advancing maritime infrastructure and fostering trade in North Karnataka.

Project Overview

JSW Infrastructure has delineated the salient features of the proposed Keni Port, underscoring its contemporary, eco-friendly, and mechanized facilities tailored for handling cape-size vessels. The initial phase is earmarked for a throughput capacity of 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with considerable potential for expansion in the long term. Keni Port strategically sits between Mormugao Port in the north and New Mangalore Port in the south, augmenting its significance in the region.

Strategic Location and Purpose

Conceived as an all-weather, greenfield, multi-cargo, direct berthing, deep-water commercial port, Keni Port is designed to cater to a diverse array of cargoes. Its strategic positioning aims to serve industries in the North Karnataka region, encompassing Bellary, Hosapete, Hubballi, Kalaburagi, and South Maharashtra. The port's proximity to operational major ports solidifies its role as a vital trade gateway for the region.

Transportation Connectivity

JSW Infrastructure has underscored the planned rail connectivity for Keni Port, situated on the southern side and linked to the existing Konkan line north of the Ankola station. The proposed railway alignment spans approximately 8 km, ensuring efficient transportation. Additionally, the port is poised to benefit from well-established road and railway connectivity, facilitating seamless cargo movement.
